Valerie Harper attended Hunter College and the New School for Social Research, both in New York City.  Her stage career began at New York's Radio City Music Hall as a member of the corps de ballet.  Valerie had very little TV experience when she was cast as Rhoda on "Mary Tyler Moore" but quickly became one of the biggest stars in the medium and let to the spin-off "Rhoda."  "Rhoda" was one of the most hailed TV shows of the 1970s and the ratings exceeded those of its predecessor, "Mary Tyler Moore" in the first two seasons. 

 

Over the years, Valerie has starred in many movies, various sitcoms, off-Broadway and Broadway.  In addition to acting, she is also devotes much of her time to The Hunger Project which is dedicated to bring an end to world hunger by the turn of the century, a founder of LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone) and is involved with Save the Children, AFRICARE, OXFAM, RESULTS and supports women's rights issues.

 

In 2000, Valerie Harper and Mary Tyler Moore reprised their roles in a made for TV movie "Mary & Rhoda".
